The Crossover
W. John MacMullen
30 x 21 in (76 x 53 cm)

Repurposed cotton fabric, polyester batting, cotton and viscose thread. Machine pieced, -quilted, and -embroidered.

This piece is from my “(ch)art quilt” series of art quilts that incorporate data into art objects. It plots fifty years of undergraduate enrollment data by gender (blue=male, magenta=female) to illustrate the “crossover” point in 1978 when female enrollment surpassed that of males for the first time. (Data source: U.S. National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).)

Selected quilts from Nina Paley’s solo show at Sleepy Creek Vineyards, Oakwood IL. Hanging through August, so go check it out!
